Early detection helped musician Heather Jones in her battle with cervical cancer. The 32-year-old bassist for local band The Goody Two Shoes was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year and underwent replica clothing surgery in late November. The Centers for Disease Control estimates more than $2 billion is spent on the treatment of cervical cancer per year in the U.S. But treatment is expensive, even with a good health plan helping to cover medical costs. When Jones' hospital bills began to pile up, Upton stepped in to organize a benefit for his friend. wholesale colthing "She's doing pretty good at this point, but she doesn't have health insurance so we're just trying to do what we can to help her out," Upton said. "She's going to have to go through some mild chemo treatments, which they weren't anticipating initially, so that's even more stuff on top of what she's already got going on." Upton's band the Give Ups will perform at the benefit at Blind Bob's on Saturday, Jan. 9, along with Legbone, Jasper the Colossal and Northwest Ordinance. "We tried to get a combination of bands that Heather's band Goody Two Shoes are friends with and have played with," Upton said. "We went with the people that wanted to chip in and were able to do it. There were definitely people that wanted to do it that embroidered patches couldn't and others that tried to get involved a little bit later when we already had too many bands so we might do another benefit show." In the meantime, Upton has helped organize a bowling fundraiser for Jones from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Poelking Lanes in Kettering. Preregistration is required. Sign up at Blind Bob's on Jan. 9 or contact Marcie Serrano at marcier4@yahoo. com. "This bowling weekend extends to all people, like the ones that don't like going out to concerts," Upton said. "It's very family-oriented so it's going to be really cool." CONTACT contributing arts and music writer Don Thrasher at .
